Anurag Thakur on Asia Cup Controversy: India Could Be Knocked Out of Tournament if Pakistan Match Is Skipped

Speaking to the media in Pune, Anurag Thakur said, "When multinational tournaments are organised by ACC or ICC, it becomes a compulsion, a necessity for nations to participate. If they don't do that, they will be eliminated from the tournament, they will have to forfeit the match, and the other team will get the points."

Risk of Being Out of the Tournament… Blood and Sport Don’t Go Together, but Anurag Thakur Responds (Image Source: Social Media)

India and Pakistan are set to play against each other on 14 September in Dubai in the Asia Cup 2025. The upcoming match has caused a big controversy in India. Opposition parties are demanding that the match be cancelled, referring to the Pahalgam terror attack, and accusing the central government of double standards. In response, BJP MP Anurag Thakur said that playing the match is important, because if India skips it, the team will be knocked out of the tournament. He also clarified that India does not play bilateral series with Pakistan and will only play in multinational tournaments like the Asia Cup or ICC events.

AAP attacks the Centre

AAP leader Sanjeev Jha said that the India–Pakistan match is taking place. These are the same players who, when Operation Sindoor was going on, mocked our widowed sisters. Such vile pictures were posted in which Pakistan Army Chief Munir is shown applying sindoor. Does the Bharatiya Janata Party think we will tolerate this insult? That’s why we are opposing this match. Modi ji had said that blood and water will not flow together so how can blood and cricket go together?

Sanjeev Jha said that big BJP leaders are sitting in top posts of the ICC and BCCI. Tell us, do you want that after your sister is insulted you still play cricket? All the victims are our sisters, and that is why we are opposing this match. We are requesting the central government that the country still has not forgotten what happened to our sisters. We do not want cricket with such traitors and enemies. We oppose it.

Is India playing Pakistan under Trump’s pressure?: Kejriwal

AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal has attacked PM Modi over the match. He wrote: “Why, Prime Minister ji, is there a need to have a match with Pakistan at all? The whole country is saying this match should not happen. Then why is it being held? Is this also being done under Trump’s pressure? How much will you bow down before Trump?”

Shiv Sena levels serious allegations on BJP

Shiv Sena (UBT) has opposed this match from the start. Uddhav Thackeray said that tomorrow there is a cricket match between India and Pakistan. The wounds of the Pahalgam terrorist attack are still fresh. We had thought we would break Pakistan; we fought a war, Operation Sindoor was launched. Our Defence Minister recently said that Operation Sindoor is still ongoing, Pakistan does not stop, keeps attacking us, our army shows courage every time. Trump says that he stopped the war, Neeraj Chopra had invited a Pakistani coach to India, but for that he was trolled by blind followers. A man who won a gold medal for India was called a traitor—imagine what he must have gone through. After Operation Sindoor, delegations were sent around the world to inform other countries; now I want to ask Modi, what do you call this? A business of patriotism?

Has Operation Sindoor been stopped: Uddhav

Uddhav Thackeray said, “I want to ask Amit Shah, will you announce that we have stopped Operation Sindoor? He had called Qureshi the Pakistanis’ sister? The army is fighting on the border. People were killed because of their religion, don’t you value Hindu dharma? Define your Hindutva. This is an opportunity to tell the world that we are against terrorism and Pakistan is doing this. Not just water, we should have no ties with Pakistan. This should have been our country’s stand.” He said that Balasaheb Thackeray was strictly against these India versus Pakistan cricket matches. If only Sushma Swaraj were here, if Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel were Prime Minister today, Pakistan would not even exist. What is S. Jaishankar doing? All people who love the country should boycott tomorrow’s cricket match.
